Laboratory Iron Bacteria Test - Why?

Iron Bacteria is a problem that can cause both odors and taste to your water as well as cause possible corrosion to your pipes, and clog screens thus reducing water flow. A way to determine if you might have iron bacteria would be look at your toilet tank to see if there is a brownish slime growing on the sides of the tank. If you have a reddish, brownish or yellowish color to your water - this too may be an indication of iron bacteria. If your water smells musty or similar to sewage, this too may indicate Iron Bacteria. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you may want to perform an Iron Bacteria Water Test.

How Iron Bacteria is recognized in Water:

TASTE AND ODOR: Iron bacteria often produce unpleasant tastes and odors commonly reported as: "swampy," "oily or petroleum," "cucumber," "sewage" "rotten vegetation," or "musty." The taste or odor may be more noticeable after the water has not been used for some time. Iron bacteria do NOT produce hydrogen sulfide, the "rotten egg" smell.

COLOR: Iron bacteria usually cause orange, brown, red or slightly yellow stains on fixtures, and sometimes colored water. In severe cases it is common to see rainbow-colored oily residue on the surface.

RED SLIMY DEPOSITS: Iron bacteria leaves sticky slime which is typically rusty in color, but may be orange, brown, red, slightly yellow or even grey. Check a toilet tank for bacteria growth.

The characteristics above may be reason for a iron bacteria water test. However, bad taste and odor may be caused by other contaminants such as ferrous iron, sulfate, hydrogen sulfide, manganese or other biological organisms such as sulfur bacteria.
