Iron is a common problem in water, especially well water. It manifests itself as orange or brown spots on fixtures. US EPA maximum recommended level of iron in water is 0.3 ppm (mg/L). We provide a full range of iron removal filters, from small 10"x2.5" cartridges to whole house and light commercial iron removal systems.

 

Two typical sources of iron contamination exist: metal iron, which can stain laundry, plumbing fixtures and changes taste. When exposed to air, metal iron turns into rust. The second contaminant common for well water is iron bacteria. Typically, iron bacteria will look like a orange or brown slime on screens, pipes, plumbing, water hiters, in toilet tanks etc. It can also cause an odor. Use Ida's iron check water test to detect metal iron, and NTL WaterCheck Iron Bacteria Water Test (which you have to send to a lab) to detect bacteria-based iron.

 

To treat up to 3 ppm ferrous or ferric iron (metal iron), use Pentek RFFE20-BB Iron Reduction Filter in a Big Blue 20x4.5 housing.

If iron is above 3 ppm or if it is bacteria-based, use Iron and Hydrogen Sulfide Whole House System up to 15 ppm.
